The Kids Winter Challenge in Saalbach

Did it together with 2 little ones and found it to be super-cool!

Saalbach is also in a class of its own for families with kids in winter. In addition to the family-friendly offers in the 270 kilometres of pistes in the ski area, there are countless adventures for young and old mountain fans to experience. Whether for guests from all over the world or for local children of all ages - this is snow fun at its best!

Fun and variety on the mountain and in the valley is guaranteed in the most laid-back ski area in the Alps: I set off with some kids to test out the KIDS WINTER CHALLENGE. It's a good thing that there are a good 60 huts in the Skicircus, many of which can be reached without skis. What would a relaxed winter's day be without a hearty snack? Our motto: off to winter fun!

The KIDS WINTER CHALLENGE in Saalbach

As the perfect counterpart to the KIDS HIKING CHALLENGE, which guarantees fun and action in summer, the KIDS WINTER CHALLENGE attracts children to the mountains in the frosty months. The cool activities are basically age-independent and are therefore a real highlight even for the little ones. What could be better than enjoying the fresh air together - and getting a cool award at the same time?

It's that simple:

  • Collect the KIDS-WINTER-CHALLENGE control card from the tourist office or download it
  • Document the various stations with the pinchers at the checkpoints
  • Receive your well-deserved award at the tourist office (two completed stations earn you the bronze, three the silver and four or five the golden clown)
The stations - each an adventure in itself!

  1. Tobogganing in Saalbach Hinterglemm
The 3.5 kilometre run on the Reiterkogel is a real MUST-SEE experience for locals and guests alike! The easy-going toboggan run leads from the Reiterkogel middle station back down to the valley with the best views. The lift company's own toboggans, which can be hired at the valley station, have a brake and are perfect for up to two people. Depending on the weather and snow conditions, the toboggan run is floodlit in the evening. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in winter. (Checkpoint: Reiterkogel ticket office) The second toboggan run, which is in operation depending on snow conditions, is the one at the Spielberghaus. You can walk to the cosy hut or book in advance to be picked up by the Pistenbully. (Checkpoint: Spielberghaus)

  2. Summit victory of your choice
Many of the lifts in Saalbach Hinterglemm can also be used without skis and take winter fans of all ages comfortably to the most beautiful winter hiking routes and marvellous huts. For the KIDS WINTER CHALLENGE, there are three summits to choose from: the Zwölferkogel, the Westgipfel or the Wildenkarkogel. (Checkpoints: located at the summit cross, easily accessible from the lift)

  3. Golden Gate & Tree top trail
Another highlight awaits visitors of all ages in the Hinterglemm valley head. The Golden Gate Bridge of the Alps and the Treetop trail are enthroned high above the valley floor and invite you to take a walk together with the best views. The attractions are open all year round and are a popular excursion destination for locals and visitors alike, especially in winter thanks to the magical scenery. You can get to the entrance either on foot from Lengau or - very conveniently - by horse-sleigh! (Checkpoint: Baumzipfelweg)

  4. Fairytale forest
The fairytale forest is also a very special experience in winter. When ancient stories and fairy tales are told in the snow-covered forest, kids and adults alike are delighted. The fairytale forest is illuminated in the evening, making it perfect for an after-dinner outing. It is recommended that you only visit with good shoes, as the paths in the forest are natural and can be slippery. (Checkpoint: In the middle of the fairytale forest, well hidden by a figure. Can you find it?) You can also visit the fairytale forest as part of a guided lantern walk. These tours are regularly organised by the tourism association. You can find all the information here

  5. Piste Fun in the Skicircus
The "Pistengaudi" category is in a class of its own and is reserved for real piste speedsters. The aim is to find the different snow parks on the control map and tick off the symbols at the checkpoints. So nothing stands in the way of a marvellous day's skiing!
Breaks are a must!

There are a good 60 mountain huts in the Glemmtal where regional and delicious food is served. Depending on your taste, there are rustic mountain huts that use produce from their own farms, modern mountain restaurants with national and international cuisine and spacious sun terraces. Because - as we all know - yeast dumplings taste best with a view!

And once you have ticked off the various stops, you will not only take home unforgettable experiences, but also your very own personal award. At the tourist office (Glemmtaler Landesstraße 550, 5753 Saalbach), the bronze, silver and gold clowns are waiting for you. And which one will you grab?

Our summary

The adventures of the KIDS WINTER CHALLENGE are in no way inferior to those of the KIDS WANDER CHALLENGE. Auntie likes it and so do the kids - what more could you want? Well-dressed, all the stations can be explored even when it's snowing.
